Featured Resident: Tom Stroud

Tom Stroud is a fountain of positive energy that never turns off, the type of person you hope for as a neighbor and friend. Tom was certainly the right man at the right place and time when he signed on with Working to Give LLC, a business headquartered right in downtown Disneyland, Anaheim CA. Working to Give operates kiosks in Disneyland selling Churro, Calipop Popcorn, Cotton Candy Creations, and Blue Ribbon Corn Dogs. While it is a for-profit company, Working to Give reinvests 50% of its profits back into the company for continued growth and the other 50% is given away to help men and women reach their very best potential.

The company’s founder, Matthew Holguin, is known for his famous business principle and quote, “The success of our company is not based on how much we make, but how much we are willing to give away.” Matthew’s mandate resonated with Tom; as he explains, “I believe in making a difference in the community.” When Tom started with Working to Give shortly after its incorporation, he brought along his special energy and guiding principles which had made him a success in all of his previous endeavors.

Before Working to Give, Tom’s early career began at a carnival in Indio, where he saw how the fair brought joy to others. He also had a successful career in the print business, spreading cheer wherever he went. Tom has always put his heart into everything that he became involved in. One of his greatest life missions has been to work to the very best of his abilities, and to turn a bad mood into a good mood.

Tom shared his insights about customers he encountered over the years and how he would give genuine and personalized compliments; he elaborates, “Give a compliment to make someone’s day, it is free and easy to give!” Tom’s outlook on life is contagious, and studies have shown that a positive attitude is beneficial in many aspects of life for several reasons:

Emotional well-being: A positive attitude helps improve your overall emotional well-being. It allows you to approach life’s challenges with optimism and resilience. When you maintain a positive outlook, you’re more likely to experience happiness, contentment and a sense of fulfillment.

Health benefits: Numerous studies have shown a strong correlation between a positive attitude and improved physical health. A positive mindset can lead to lower levels of stress, reduced risk of cardiovascular problems, improved immune system function and increased longevity.

Increased resilience: Reframing your mind allows you to view failures or obstacles as temporary and surmountable, enabling you to persevere and find solutions. This resilience is crucial for personal growth and achieving success in various areas of life.

Improved relationships: Positivity can have a profound impact on your relationships with others. People are naturally drawn to individuals who exude optimism and positivity. By maintaining a positive attitude, you can build stronger connections, enhance communication, and foster a supportive and uplifting environment.

Problem-solving and creativity: A positive mindset promotes a more open and flexible mindset. When facing challenges or brainstorming solutions, a positive attitude encourages a more optimistic and creative approach. It helps you see opportunities, think outside the box, and come up with innovative ideas.

Motivation and productivity: Positive thinking fuels motivation and increases productivity. When you believe in your abilities and maintain an optimistic outlook, you’re more likely to set goals, work diligently toward them and persist in the face of obstacles. Positive thinking creates a cycle of achievement and success.

Influence on others: Your positive attitude can inspire and uplift those around you. By radiating positivity, you can have a positive influence on others’ moods and attitudes. This can create a ripple effect, spreading positivity and fostering a supportive and encouraging atmosphere in your personal and professional circles. When not at Working to Give, Tom enjoys semi-retirement at his home in Sun City, a community which he describes as fun and welcoming. In keeping with his positive attitude and sunny disposition, Tom adds, “The greatest gift is your time, because you can never get that back. Give from the goodness of your heart and don’t expect anything back.”
