CV Firebird Inaugural 2022- 2023 Season Highlights

Who would have thought that hockey would find its way into the heart of our scorching desert? When the news broke about a new ice rink and a sports team coming to town, many were surprised and maybe even skeptical about the potential success. However, the CV Firebirds, an American Hockey League (AHL) team and an affiliate of the Seattle Kraken, proved and impressed us all with their triumphant debut season.
The CV Firebirds started their journey with a bang, winning their first-ever franchise game in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, on October 16th, 2022. With the Acrisure Arena officially opening in mid-December 2022, the team faced the challenge of playing away games and utilizing the Kraken Community Iceplex and Climate Pledge Arena as their temporary homes. Despite these obstacles, the Firebirds rose above and showed their mettle, proving themselves as a force to be reckoned with in the AHL league.

In June of 2023, the CV Firebirds celebrated a remarkable victory against the Milwaukee Admirals at the Acrisure Arena, earning the prestigious title of Western Conference Champions. The AHL Rookie of the Year, Tye Kartye, played a pivotal role, scoring twice and propelling the team to the Calder Cup Finals against the formidable Hershey Bears, the Eastern Conference Champions. The final showdown between the two teams was breathtaking, with a nail-biting game seven that went into overtime a rare occurrence seen only once in 1953. Although the Firebirds fought valiantly, Hershey managed to snatch the victory in the end, securing their 12th Calder Cup in team history.

Throughout the season, the CV Firebirds captured the hearts of fans with some unforgettable highlights. One of the fan favorites was the beloved goaltender, Joey Daccord, whose name was chanted at every game.

His remarkable skills and performances during the playoffs earned him a two- year, $2.4 million deal with the Seattle Kraken. Daccord set multiple AHL Playoff records, leaving a lasting legacy on the ice and in the hearts of Coachella Valley Firebirds fans.

Another noteable and historical milestone for the team was the appointment of Jessica Campbell as the first-ever female assistant coach in the league. Hailing from the small town of Rocanville, Saskatchewan, Canada, Campbell’s hard work, talent, and determination were evident as she shattered barriers and showed that the sky is the limit. Her impressive background as a player, captaining Team Canada at the U-18 World Junior Championships and scoring the gold-medal- winning goal, made her a true inspiration to all aspiring athletes.

With the CV Firebirds’ first season behind us, it’s time to gear up for more exhilarating action and to get ready for another extraordinary chapter in the story of our beloved Firebirds! The new season kicks off at home in the Acrisure Arena on October 13th, 2023, promising even more excitement, victories, and unforgettable moments.
