In Rancho Mirage, there are restaurants we enjoy, and then there are those that become part of our community’s story. Las Casuelas Nuevas is one of those special places where tradition, family, and culture meet, creating an experience that has delighted generations of diners.
The roots of this beloved restaurant trace back to the culturally vibrant city of Mazatlán in the early 1900s. There, founder Florencio “Del” Delgado’s grandmother lovingly prepared the traditional Mexican dishes that would inspire the family’s culinary legacy. Her recipes, rich with history, flavor, and heart, were passed down through the generations, eventually guiding Del and his wife Mary as they opened the original Las Casuelas in 1958.
Their vision was simple yet powerful: share authentic family recipes and welcome guests as though they were part of the family. That philosophy laid the foundation for what would become one of the desert’s most cherished dining traditions.
When the Delgado family expanded their dream to Rancho Mirage, they created something truly extraordinary. Las Casuelas Nuevas became the first Spanish colonial hacienda-style restaurant in the country. Designed by architect Arthur Valdes, every detail of the space was thoughtfully crafted, from the distinctive rooflines and intricate wrought-iron accents to the warm, inviting atmosphere that feels as though it has been transported straight from old-world Mexico.
The restaurant’s legacy extends beyond its beautiful architecture and beloved recipes. In 2006, Mary Delgado was honored with a star on the Palm Springs Walk of Stars, recognizing her contributions to the region’s cultural and culinary heritage. More recently, the street beside the restaurant was dedicated as Via Florencio, celebrating Florencio “Del” Delgado for his vision, faith in Rancho Mirage, and for helping establish the now-famous Restaurant Row.
Today, more than half a century later, the Delgado family continues to uphold the traditions that started in a grandmother’s kitchen in Mazatlán. The recipes remain true to their roots, prepared fresh each day and served with the same warmth that has always defined the Las Casuelas experience.
As Del once said, “We worked on a philosophy of giving the customer plenty to eat, treat them well, and they’ll come back.”
