Salton Sea Update with the Salton Sea Authority Happened on May 25

Surrounded by sand, the Salton Sea glistens like a jewel in California’s crown. Less than an hour’s drive from Greater Palm Springs, this huge body of water was actually born accidentally in 1905. It was even once meant to be the Riviera of the Americas, but Mother Nature had other plans.

The Salton Sea first came into being when flooding on the Colorado River destroyed part of a canal system, forcing millions upon millions of gallons of water into the lowland area where the Salton Sea now sits. Far more devastating than one breach, the entire volume of the river continued to flow into the Salton lowlands for nearly two years before engineers were able to stop it. By that time, one of the world’s largest inland seas had been created.

The Salton Sea Authority protects human health and revitalizes the environment and economy of the Sea. The Salton Sea Authority recognizes that this requires an integrated approach to recognizing old problems as potential new solutions, and to delivering multiple benefits with thoughtful strategies that integrate economic opportunity and environmental stability.

Coming Up on August 24: Housing Update with Lift to Rise

Lift to Rise is revolutionizing the way affordable housing is financed in our community. The cost of housing in the Coachella Valley is high—the median price for a single family home is $549,000. And incomes are too low—49% of Coachella households earn below $50,000 per year. “We Lift” is the result of more than 70 community partners and their multi-year effort to change the way we develop affordable housing. It’s a ground-breaking solution that pools resources to attract additional capital, allowing local developers to get their community-focused projects built and creating more places that people can call home. This fund is integral to reaching our goal of building 10,000 affordable homes by 2028.

Registration can be made on the chamber’s website and tickets are $55 per person which includes the presentation, networking, lunch, and self-introductions. To register visit www.RanchoMirageChamber.org to email [email protected] or call us at (760) 568-9351.
