Prepare Now for the Medicare Annual Enrolment Period

Written by Marv Law

Although the Medicare Annual Enrolment Period (AEP) is not until October 15 to December 7, there are actions you can take now to better prepare for that time.

Your plan is required to provide you with an Annual Notice of Change booklet, which most people receive around October 1. This compares the current year’s benefits with next year’s benefits. While many people discard this booklet, it’s best to review the changes to your plan for the next year and reach out to a local broker with questions or concerns to help determine if your current plan is still the right fit for the next year.

Begin now to interview and establish a relationship with a local experienced Medicare broker who contracts with many companies and plans, and who can assist you with identifying the right options for you. AEP gets very busy so it’s best to have this relationship established prior to that time.

Also, leading up to AEP, consider if your doctor or pharmacy might recommend changes in your prescriptions so you can include those options in your review. Changing doctors or providers may additionally be part of your plan evaluation.

Lastly, if you have plans to move in the coming year, take that into consideration so you know what your options might look like there. The length of time before you move might also impact which plan is more cost effective for you during those months. Being prepared before AEP will help you make better informed decisions for next year.
