Kathie Browne, Attorney at law

Kathie Browne first came to the desert in 2003 and fell in love with it. Having practiced law for many years, Kathie opened her own practice in Rancho Mirage in 2004, specializing in estate planning and business law. “I like to call what I do preventative law; I like to be proactive in keeping my clients out of legal trouble.”

Her number one piece of advice to clients: Don’t sign documents you don’t understand until they’ve been explained to you. In addition, agreements need to be in writing. Memories fade, and it’s nearly impossible to enforce oral agreements.

In the estate planning arena, the top reason to get your affairs in order is peace of mind and ensuring you do not leave a mess for your loved ones. Proper planning helps ensure your wishes are honored and avoids family disputes. A common misconception is that a Will is sufficient, but assets passing by Will must go through probate, which is costly and time-consuming. A living trust helps clients avoid probate court and makes leaving assets to loved ones much simpler. The most common mistake people make is procrastination, doing nothing to plan.

Five years ago, Kathie retired from law practice, but recently she re-opened her office. “I really missed the clients, colleagues, and being involved in the community.” Having practiced for 30 years, she enjoys being accessible to clients and helping them navigate the complexities of life.
