Get Out and Socialize

The COVID19 pandemic changed the world. Children and seniors were especially affected. Children lost their schooling, their sports and activities, while seniors lost their own activities and the companionship that accompanied them. Now, fortunately, children are back to their activities, but what about seniors?

Governor Newsom ended Califomia’s COVID19 State of Emergency on February 28th, 2023. Yet after over two years of isolation, some seniors are still concerned about contracting the disease and are hesitant about jumping back into a social life.

A study conducted by Brigham Young University and the University of Chapel Hill North Carolina reported that isolated seniors face a 50% higher risk of dying in five years than seniors who remain socially active. Benefits to socialization include increased mental awareness and a support system that encourages physical activity, fights depression and takes the mind off of pain and physical discomfort.
Many opportunities exist in our vibrant Coachella Valley to participate in local activities. Garden clubs, movies,

live concerts and book clubs are available. Volunteer opportunities exist with any number of worthwhile non-profit organizations and with community groups. Learn something new by taking a class:anthropology, history or social media/ technology – whatever appeals! Adopt a pet or volunteer at an animal shelter. Walk, swim, golf, play pick leb all or bowl. Enjoy meals socially, either at a retirement community or at one of our many excellent local restaurants.

COVID was scary, but isolation is scary too. Get out and enjoy all that our wonderful community offers and benefit from the social interaction that comes with it.
