Do You Have a Disaster Plan for Your Pets?

We were reminded recently by local earthquakes about how important is to be prepared, as we can never know when we might face a disaster. It is vital to have a “disaster plan” for ourselves and our families, and that includes our furry family members.

Create a “disaster kit” with water and canned goods (and bowls) for your human family members, and for  your  dog  (or  cat, bunny, hamster, bird, etc.) Don’t forget a can opener, or even better… get cans that have self-opening tabs.

What to Include in your pets’ “Disaster Kit”:

  1. A month’s supply of your medications, and any medications that your pets may be on
  2. A first aid kit with a bunch of poopy bags
  3. A leash and pet carrier for transportation
  4. Blankets/towels
  5. A book on pet first aid. It will be a great resource
  6. Calming remedies for your pet (ask your vet, or Rescue Remedy by Back is good) in case your pet becomes stressed or anxious
  7. If your dog has aggression issues, have a muzzle

Ensure that your pet is microchipped and that the information is current, and have them wear a collar with their identification information on it or on an ID tag.

Since Hurricane Katrina, it is not legal to force people to evacuate without their pets, so know your rights. We never want to think about potential disasters, but in case the unthinkable happens, be prepared. I pray we never have to use this.
