On February 25, the Sierra ballroom experienced a record- breaking attendance for a special presentation on the life and legacy of Delbert Webb, researched and presented by highly-respected historian and author Errol Magidson Ed.D. What unfolded that evening became more than a multimedia presentation; it became a living reminder of how Del Webb’s legacy continues to unite people within our home communities decades later.
“I was certainly happy about the turnout,” Errol shared, reflecting on what many attendees unanimously described as the highest-attended event in Sun City PD anyone could remember. Several hundred attendees gathered in the Sierra ballroom, eager to learn more about the man whose vision shaped the very neighborhoods where they live, work, and gather today.
Errol’s engaging presentation highlighted the extraordinary life of Del Webb in a way that felt both educational and entertaining. In a single sweeping narrative, Webb’s accomplishments unfolded like scenes from a grand American story: from his success as a real-estate pioneer reimagining communities to be designed for connection and lifestyle, to his role as co-owner of the legendary New York Yankees, helping shape one of baseball’s most storied franchises. His ventures in Las Vegas added yet another remarkable chapter. His company built the iconic Flamingo Hotel and Casino, helping set the stage for modern hospitality and entertainment. Then, of course, came Del Webb’s bold creation of Sun City in Arizona, widely recognized as the first successful master-planned retirement community.
In every chapter of his life, Webb’s work reflected bold thinking, tireless innovation, and an unwavering belief in building places where people could truly thrive.
Just as interesting as the subject itself was the presenter behind the podium. Errol Magidson, Ed.D. has earned a well-deserved reputation for captivating audiences. An accomplished author, archival researcher, documentary filmmaker, and former professor in Chicago, he was honored as Distinguished Professor of the Year (2002– 2003) by the Board of Trustees of the City Colleges of Chicago, the highest academic recognition awarded by the institution. His ability to draw sizeable crowds is no surprise; he also delivered a multimedia presentation in Sun City in March 2024 that attracted hundreds of attendees. It is a testament to his storytelling style, which transforms history into something vivid, personal, and deeply relevant to the audiences he serves.

Though the February presentation was unfortunately cut short, the enthusiasm it sparked has only grown. The Speaker Series Committee is already planning an encore presentation later this year, ensuring that even more residents will experience the story in full. If the February turnout was any indication, the next gathering promises to be just as memorable.
Perhaps the most meaningful takeaway from the evening was not simply the remarkable facts about Del Webb’s life, but the realization that his greatest achievement has a lasting impact today. Every lively ballroom, every shared laugh among neighbors, and every community gathering echoes his original vision: a place designed not just for living, but for belonging.
