As April rolls in, we start saying goodbye to many of our seasonal friends here in the desert. Safe travels to those heading back home — we’ll miss you (and so will your favorite golf tee time). Before you lock the door and hit the road, let’s talk about a few simple plumbing steps that can save you from an unwelcome surprise when you return.

First and foremost: consider shutting off your home’s main water supply. This is the single best way to prevent a small leak from turning into a full-blown indoor swimming pool while you’re away. If shutting off the main isn’t practical, at least turn off the water to appliances like washing machines and dishwashers.

Next, give your water heater some attention. If you’re leaving for more than a few weeks, switching it to “vacation mode” or lowering the temperature can save energy and reduce wear and tear.

Don’t forget your outdoor plumbing. Desert heat is no joke, and exposed hoses or fixtures can crack over time. Disconnect hoses and check that hose bibs aren’t dripping before you go.

A quick inspection under sinks and around toilets is also worth your time. Look for any signs of moisture or slow leaks — catching these early can prevent costly damage later.

Finally, if you have a trusted neighbor, ask them to check in occasionally.

A little preparation now means peace of mind while you’re away — and a smooth return when the desert calls you back next season. Safe travels!
