Sun City Performing Arts Club Season Openers!
The Sun City Performing Arts Club is back at it, preparing to launch their new season with Andrew Bergman’s hit comedy Social Security, coming this January to the Sierra Ballroom… and no, don’t worry, this has nothing to do with retirement programs, benefit statements, or the like. This comedy was written for laughs, depicting problems and characters we just might recognize!
A Story We All Know a Little Too Well
Social Security is an offbeat, yet poignant, comedy about sibling rivalry, aging, the challenges of being part of the “sandwich generation” and the age-old question…at what age are we too old for new adventures or, perhaps, even a new chapter.
Packed with recognizable characters facing situations we might have experienced and sibling drama that could look suspiciously familiar, the play hits the spot! Let’s be honest: there’s nothing more satisfying than watching characters make bigger mistakes than we did and laugh freely about them.
From Broadway to Sun City
Social Security opened on Broadway in 1986, featuring the talents of luminaries like Marlo Thomas, Olympia Dukakis, Ron Silver and Joanna Gleason. The production was directed by Mike Nichols. Mr. Nichols has won so many awards throughout his career; you’d need a spreadsheet to keep track of them. (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony) He was and posthumously remains a director in a class by himself.
That Broadway production ran 388 performances! Now it’s our turn!
A Cast That Knows How to Make You Laugh
Sun City’s production is in the capable hands of director Susan Adler, fresh off her Desert Theatre League award for both Best Director and Best Production for last year’s fast- paced comedy, “Farce of Nature”. The cast of six includes some of your longtime Sun City stage favorites as well as a couple of new faces. The entire cast and production team are working tirelessly to bring you a night of laughter, heart, and maybe even some self-recognition. It’s good to laugh at ourselves. If there’s one thing we’ve learned…if we can’t laugh at life, someone else will do it for us.
