The Danger of Doing Nothing

Written By Susan Boyer – Member & Co-owner OsteoStrong Palm Desert

We’re going to be blunt: if you were diagnosed with osteoporosis or osteopenia, what are you doing about it? If the answer is “nothing,” you are putting yourself at risk for fractures, height loss, stooped posture, and other medical complications.

Let’s take a closer look at each of these risks.

  • Bone fractures: Osteoporosis causes bones to become more fragile and porous, making them more likely to break, even with little or no trauma. Hip or spin fractures can be life-threatening and may require surgery.
  • Height loss: As bones weaken, you may lose an inch or more of your height.
  • Stooped posture: A stooped or hunched posture, also known as kyphosis, can develop as a result of spine fractures.
  • Other complications: Fractures can cause significant pain and make it difficult to dress, stand, or walk. You may also be at risk of pressure sores, pneumonia, and urinary tract infections.
  • Lower quality of life: Bone fractures can have a significant impact on your quality of life.

If you are worried about the side effects of many of the medications, we get it. But you have to do something. According to the National Institute of Health, the increased risk of death in the year following a hip fracture for women over the age of 60 is 21.2%!

In a recent study by the Karolinska Institutet  in Sweden, participants who did OsteoStrong once per week saw a 2.9 percent increase in overall bone quality and an 0.8 percent increase in BMD for the lumbar spine after just nine months
