Handling Hearing Loss

Written By Debbie Wilson

As we journey through life, we often realize that our hearing is one of the faculties that can become less reliable with age. Addressing hearing loss can be a touchy and sensitive topic, as many believe they are hearing just fine. However, there are several strategies for managing hearing loss, whether for yourself or someone you know.

If you know someone is struggling to hear or understand, it is a good idea to approach them with compassion. It’s crucial to grab the attention of the person you’re speaking to by being close by or gently tapping their shoulder. Ensuring you face them directly while speaking makes it easier for them to understand what you’re saying. Avoid dismissive phrases like “Never mind” or “It’s not important,” as these can make the person feel undervalued and disconnected from the conversation. Remember, what may seem trivial to you could be significant to them.

For many people, even in this day and age of technological advancements, considering hearing aids may be the last resort for improving hearing and comprehension. However, those who eventually opt for hearing aids often express regret at not doing so sooner. The newfound ability to hear significantly boosts self-esteem and enhances overall quality of life.

Modern hearing aids are smaller and more discreet than ever, often unnoticed by others. Once fitted with hearing aids, engaging in activities that stimulate auditory senses, such as listening to music, podcasts, or watching TV and movies, is essential. This helps train the brain to process various sounds and voices effectively.

Communication with your hearing healthcare professional is key. Don’t hesitate to provide feedback on volume levels or if certain sounds need to be corrected. Hearing Aids must be appropriately adjusted by a professional to your level of hearing and will take some worthwhile adjustment time. Trained professionals are there to assist you in achieving optimal hearing and understanding.

In addition to addressing hearing concerns, prioritizing self-care through activities like yoga, exercise, and regular walks can contribute to overall well-being and confidence. It’s essential to recognize that you’re not alone in experiencing hearing loss; implementing these trategies can benefit everyone involved. By fostering understanding and communication, we can navigate the challenges of hearing loss with greater ease and empathy.
