The Sun City Insider team loves to uncover local gems, and J’s Deli quickly stood out during our recent visit. They opened their doors two and a half years ago and have steadily built a loyal following—and it’s easy to see why. J’s Deli is more than a delicatessen; it’s a true artisan experience.
Owners Ron and Shelly Tamkin with Jay and Vanessa Rubenstein have created a clean, modern delicatessen. Jay is hands-on and ever-present, personally greeting us upon arrival and ensuring we felt right at home. Vanessa, Jay’s wife, works alongside him, bringing an authentic deli with a bakery on the premise, and full catering to the Palm Desert community, that embodies homemade goodness. Jay’s passion for quality is evident in every aspect of the business, from the freshest ingredients to the careful preparation of each dish.
One of the first things we noticed upon entering the restaurant was their breathtaking patio. The restaurant is much larger than one would think, judging from their storefront. The décor is warm and inviting. In the center of the restaurant, you can view their impressively clean open kitchen encased in glass.
J’s Deli has a firm commitment to healthier eating. They do not add salt or preservatives to their soups and dishes. Every soup is made from scratch. There are no shortcuts or artificial enhancers here! It’s as real as it gets—the quality is unbeatable.
Jay was proud to showcase their hand-crafted bagels. “Many people are surprised we’re a bakery as well,” he shared. These bagels are so good they have earned the approval of East Coasters who often reminisce about bagels they grew up with. Soft, fresh, and made daily, they are a staple not to be missed.
Some of the deli’s most popular dishes include the classic Reuben sandwich, the Asian Chicken Salad, and their hand sliced Nova Lox. J’s also offers breakfast all day, featuring Eggs Benedict and Challah French Toast. They have wraps, burgers, homemade meatloaf, and another 150 selections on their menu. There is truly something for everyone. Jay admitted orders can take a little longer, but that’s because everything is made fresh to order. The wait is well worth it.
For those seeking more than just delicious food, J’s Deli offers live entertainment every Friday night. J’s also has a full bar with big screen TVs showing live sporting events, including all the NFL and college football games. Don’t forget to take advantage of their daily Happy Hour from 3PM to 5 PM.
