Transforming Desert Island

The Artful Vision of Miguel Nelson

Under the visionary leadership of Miguel Nelson, a new era is dawning for Desert Island as it is quickly becoming one of the most anticipated golf resort destinations in the Valley

Miguel is leading the transformation of the country club into a boutique resort, in addition to overseeing a comprehensive enhancement of its golf course. His journey embodies a fusion of business acumen, artistic passion, and an unwavering pursuit of creative excellence.

With a portfolio of renowned event spaces in downtown LA’s Arts District, the pandemic sparked an idea in Miguel to create a Palm Springs venue with outdoor event spaces. After an extensive search, he became captivated with Desert Island in Rancho Mirage, recognizing its latent potential. Acquiring the property in December 2021 set his transformative plans in motion. An 18-month construction phase is slated to begin in 2025, culminating in a boutique lifestyle hotel boasting thirty-four guest suites, an Olympic pool swim club, eleven villas, and comprehensive property renovations. The community’s affinity for Desert Island and the City Council’s commendation and support for Miguel’s stewardship attest to his unwavering commitment to its exciting evolution.

Miguel, armed with a Master’s Degree in Business and a profound interest in art and architecture, shifted his focus to art in 1993. After obtaining a second Master’s Degree in Art in 2003, he relocated to Los Angeles, where he fell in love with the ocean and the allure of Hollywood. His creative spirit thrived in hosting loft events and meticulously curating spaces seamlessly blending art, performances, and event hospitality. Everything he had accomplished prepared him for his Desert Island venture. Miguel’s vision transcends tangible upgrades, aiming to create a parallel universe—an oasis for peaceful relaxation. Inspired by 1970s and 80s glamour with Hollywood vibes, Desert Island promises an immersive experience for travelers, locals, and avid golf enthusiasts. The introduction of a new gallery within the clubhouse integrates art into Desert Island’s fabric, showcasing original paintings, textiles, ceramics, and sculptures. Miguel envisions a haven nurturing talent, fostering connections, and crafting escapes from worldly worries.

At the heart of Desert Island’s metamorphosis lies Miguel’s visionary outlook and the collaborative synergy of an exceptional team, including General Manager Waleska Campbell, Executive Chef Jon Butler, and Head Golf Professional TJ Hefner. “We have a great team, and that’s the key to success,” Miguel emphasizes. He is incredibly excited about the new chef he’s recruited for The Penney Restaurant & Bar. Desert Island Resort also embodies Miguel’s artistic ethos, which is evident in the meticulous details found in the clubhouse remodeling. The establishment will feature a unique rare-spirits library and parlor and a luxurious piano cocktail lounge, all designed to elevate the current guest experience. “We aim to create a dining and golf destination for everyone—residents, guests, and travelers alike,” Miguel enthuses. His plans for a boutique resort, an agave farm for tequila, and a revitalized golf course will redefine luxury in hospitality. Miguel’s enhancements to the golf course go beyond mere aesthetics. He is collaborating with Amy Alcott, Hall of Fame golfer and course designer. Together, they seek to create a dynamic, picturesque, and ultimately enjoyable experience for passionate golfers.

His vision for Desert Island is an ongoing artistic endeavor, transforming a dream into a living, breathing art installation. Miguel aspires to propel Desert Island beyond conventional resort boundaries into an experiential piece of art that embodies creativity, intelligence, and profound conceptual thinking. Miguel Nelson is not merely an owner but an artist shaping the desert’s up-and-coming hot spot, interweaving
art, business, golf, and hospitality—a legacy poised to be enjoyed through the Valley for generations.
