Tom Scaramellino – A Legacy of Excellence

Tom Scaramellino Reflects on a Career in Hospitality

For decades, Tom Scaramellino has been a trailblazer in the hospitality industry. As the General Manager of the Westin Rancho Mirage Golf Resort & Spa since 2016, he has elevated the resort to world-renowned status. Now, with retirement on the horizon, Tom reflects on a career spanning transformative projects and an unwavering dedication to creating unforgettable guest experiences.

National Success to Rancho Mirage

Tom’s hospitality journey began in Las Vegas, where he studied Hotel and Restaurant Management at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Armed with ambition and a knack for leadership, he opened and managed hotels across Dallas, Charleston, New York City, San Diego, San Francisco, and finally Rancho Mirage.

Outside of work, Tom treasures time with his wife, Patty, their two children, Danielle and Thomas Joseph, and four grandchildren. He also enjoys cooking, golf, and leading high- performing teams—passions that have grounded him throughout his remarkable career.

Transforming the Westin Rancho Mirage

Under Tom’s leadership, the Westin Rancho Mirage underwent a $15 million renovation in 2021, redefining luxury in the desert. “The renovation  allowed  us  to  better  serve  our  key  market  segments,”  he explains. Highlights included enhanced guestrooms, modernized meeting spaces, and The Backyard—an event venue with Moroccan-inspired design, an outdoor kitchen, and a stage for live culinary events and entertainment.

The resort also reimagined underutilized spaces, such as converting the golf shop into The Palm Club, now boasting over 100 members. Family-friendly upgrades, including the revamped Pinz & Pints Lounge with arcade games and duck-pin bowling, and enhancements to the Las Brisas pool area, have cemented the resort as a haven for relaxation and recreation.

Navigating Challenges

Leading a resort through the pandemic tested Tom’s resilience. “Managing over 400 associates during COVID-19 was the most daunting experience of my career,” Tom shares. “The calls from loyal associates eager to return to work were heart-wrenching. We stayed connected with emotional Zoom calls every few weeks to provide updates and support.”

Post-pandemic, the resort has continued its commitment to the community, earning Marriott’s prestigious Hero Award. This year alone, associates contributed over 1,500 volunteer hours and $60,000 to local causes. Guests also love the resort’s partnership with the Palm Springs Animal Shelter, which has found homes for over 280 dogs.

Bringing Live with Kelly and Mark to Palm Springs

Tom’s leadership was pivotal in hosting the first Palm Springs taping of Live with Kelly and Mark, set against the stunning backdrop of the Westin’s 18th hole. For Tom, this wasn’t just a production—it was his own version of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. “When the opportunity arose, it was a no-brainer for us to submit our resort for consideration,” Tom shared.

Months of planning culminated in a production highlighting the desert’s beauty and the Westin’s world-class hospitality. Executive Producer Michael Gelman praised Tom’s instrumental contributions, while Tom reflected on the teamwork involved. “Our mid-valley location, with its 360-degree views of majestic mountains, immediately impressed the scout team,” Tom recalled. The response was overwhelming, with customers applauding the effort through texts, calls, and social media.

A New Chapter Ahead

After nearly a decade at the Westin Rancho Mirage, Tom is preparing for retirement. “I will deeply miss witnessing this destination’s growth,” he reflects. Over nine years, he has marveled at the natural beauty and the unity of Rancho Mirage’s Joint Powers Authority and Visit Greater Palm Springs.

Tom fondly recalls his daily golf cart rides to work, inspired to deliver exceptional guest experiences and support his team. “This place is truly special, and I’m proud to have been part of its journey,” he says.

As Tom steps into retirement, his legacy of excellence, warmth, and innovation will continue to inspire the hospitality industry. Those who have worked alongside him celebrate a leader whose contributions have left an indelible mark on the Westin Rancho Mirage and beyond.

Whatever the next chapter holds, Tom Scaramellino’s dedication to hospitality and his enduring impact will not soon be forgotten.
