Happy Fall! As we start to cool off (finally), we are going to spend more time outside with our pups. As fun as it is to get back to our long walks and backyard barbecues, it is important to be aware that we may not be alone.
As we build new developments, we are taking away the natural habitat of our wildlife, especially coyotes. They are becoming increasingly bold as they seek food and water.
Small dogs can be taken in a heartbeat, and larger dogs are not safe either, as coyotes are now learning to hunt in packs. I suggest you close your doggie doors and always have eyes on your dog whenever the dog is outside. If you think that your dog will be safe in your enclosed yard, know that coyotes can easily jump an 8-foot wall!
When walking your dog, don’t use a flexi-leash. And do not be distracted on your phone. Pay attention to your surroundings. I also suggest to walk with hornet spray, and put your dog in coyote proof clothing (an outfit with spikes that will deter a coyote’s bite and a hawk’s claws.)
If you see a coyote, bobcat, owl, or a hawk get inside right away. Awareness and prevention can save you from potential heartache.
