The opportunistic omnivores eat a diverse diet that includes small mammals, birds, and reptiles as well as fruits and plants. They are skilled hunters with remarkable survival skills. Their ability to adapt their diet to the available resources and endure the harsh conditions of the desert is a testament to their resilience.
Revered by the Cahuilla people, the coyote often appears in the stories and legends, symbolizing adaptability and intelligence. These tales highlight the coyote’s ability to navigate the challenging desert landscape and survive against all odds. The coyote’s presence in the Indian Canyons and the San Jacinto Mountains serves as a reminder of the deep connection between nature and the people who have inhabited these lands since time immemorial.
