I can’t tell you how many times people in their early 60s tell me they can’t wait to turn 65 so they can get Medicare! It’s probably the only reason people have to celebrate growing older. But when they get there, they are overwhelmed and confused by the system. And the typical question I get is, “Why do they make it so complicated?’ Well, the answer is, “I don’t know!” LOL!! But I can help un-complicate it!
The most important thing to remember is that while your friends and family mean well, they only understand some of it. They aren’t aware of the annual changes, and their plan is the “best one” for them, not necessarily for YOU.
Some of the things you have to consider are whether you have any health conditions that need special attention, whether you go to see doctors frequently, whether you travel, and whether you are a snowbird. Do you take medications? How many?
While all plans have the same core benefits, some extras differ. Also, some plans have monthly premiums while others do not. Some have copays, and some have none. Are your doctors taking the plan? Can you go to any doctor, or do you know if you need to stay in a network?
Medicare is complicated to navigate, no matter what plan you have. It’s essential to be well-informed and to be aware of how to maximize your benefits. Please don’t leave it to the system to figure it out for you.
