Meet Ruth Hunter, a remarkable woman celebrating her 100th birthday this month. Ruth served as a United States Air Force aircraft instrument technician before discovering her true passion for teaching, leading to a rewarding career in education. One of her students 68 years ago was Sharon Ratliffe, who was at risk of dropping out of high school. Instead, she was inspired by Ruth and went on to earn a Ph.D. Later Ruth and Sharon reunited and moved into Sun City during the 1990s. Together, they joined the Read With Me Program, helping young minds at Oasis Elementary School learn to read.
To support these students further, they crafted jewelry and donated all profits to fund a college scholarship program for Oasis kindergartners who completed high school. The program has already sent three students to college, marking a heartwarming success story. Read more on page 22.
