Mental Health Tips for Retirees

According to a study by the CDC, 20% of people over age 55 experience mental health issues such as anxiety, severe cognitive impairment and mood disorders like depression or bipolar disorder. Retirees are particularly affected by loss, grief, isolation, concentration concerns and memory issues. It’s especially important to look after your mental health in your retirement years – here are just three tips to
get you started.

Keep your mind active

Research has shown that mentally-engaging activities can help improve brain functions like reaction time and short-term memory. Some examples are puzzle games like crosswords or Sudoku, playing music, reading or writing, or even learning the basics of a new language.

Stay on top of sleep and nutrition

Good nutrition and sleep are key in helping retirees stay healthy. Aim for 7-9 hours of sleep per night, and focus on incorporating high-fiber fruits, veggies and whole grains into your diet as much as possible. Your body and brain will thank you!

Stay connected

Unfortunately, loneliness can be a major concern for those 55 and over. But the good news is that living in a retirement community can help you feel connected. Whether it’s a quick coffee with a neighbor, joining a committee, or starting a new club, taking advantage of social options is key for good mental health.
