Keep Cool This August

Summers here in the desert can get HOT. A great way to cool down is to play in the water with your dog. Swimming in a pool is great summer exercise for our dogs. It strengthens their hearts and lungs by stimulating all their muscles without tiring or putting pressure on their hip and back joints. It also provides muscle strength. Swimming is a great cardio workout and a perfect way for dogs to burn off excess energy.

Your dog can also enjoy water fun by playing in a kiddie pool or with a hose. But be aware that in our climate, kiddie pools can heat up to dangerous temperatures if left too long, and hoses that have not been used in a while will initially run HOT water that can scald your dog. Frequently refresh your kiddie pool with cold water and keep it in the shade, and always run the hose and check the temperature before spraying it on your pup.

When teaching a dog to swim, ALWAYS show them where the exit is and how to get out on their own. It is a good idea for them to wear a doggy life jacket while in or around a pool. NEVER throw a dog in a pool. Introduce them to it slowly, at their pace, with you. And never leave your dog unsupervised by any water. Dogs should be bathed after going for a swim to protect their skin and coats from pool chemicals. If your dog shows fear of the water, don’t push it. Let them enjoy the a/c instead.

Have fun while being safe keeping cool this summer with your dog!
