International Classical Concerts of the Desert (ICCD) A Legacy of Music and Friendship

The first notes rise softly, then fill the room, strings and piano blending in a delicate harmony that seems to float through the desert air. There’s a stillness in the audience, a shared breath between artist and listener, and a moment of pure connection that only live music can create. This is the timeless magic of the International Classical Concerts of the Desert, a beloved series that has brought world-class musicians to the Coachella Valley for nearly three decades.

It all began with Dr. Mimi Rudolph, a passionate physician and music lover who, in the mid-1990s, welcomed musicians into her Palm Springs home. Guests gathered for intimate performances, passing a hat to support the artists. As her gatherings grew, so did their purpose. A few years later, the concerts had moved to the Annenberg Theatre at the Palm Springs Desert Museum, transforming a simple neighborhood tradition into a cultural legacy that continues today.

Then the series eventually moved to the Rancho Mirage Library, and is now established at the Palm Desert Community Presbyterian Church. Joan Rubane, president of the ICCD for over twenty years, witnessed its remarkable growth. A concert pianist with a doctorate in piano performance, Joan’s love for music runs deep. “It’s like a family,” she says of the concert community she has nurtured. “I know their names; we’re on a first-name basis, and when they come back each season, it’s like welcoming old friends home.”

The sense of belonging makes the series so special. Patrons gather not just for the music but for the people — from the hugs in the foyer, the quiet chats before the lights dim, and the laughter that lingers long after the last note. The artists, too, often become part of that extended family, speaking from the stage about their craft and mingling with the audience afterward.

Among the dedicated supporters helping this tradition thrive is board member, cellist, and fellow Sun City resident Richard Treat, whose career spans from Hollywood soundstages to world-class symphony halls. A Los Angeles native, Richard earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in music from California State University, Los Angeles, where he studied under renowned instructors Stephen De’ak, Elenore Schoenfeld, and Lucien LaPorte.

Over the years, he has performed with some of Southern California’s most celebrated ensembles, including the Los Angeles Philharmonic and other world-renowned orchestras. Beyond the concert stage, Richard’s cello has been heard by millions on film scores for “The Lion King”, “Mission: Impossible”, “Austin Powers”, and “The Thin Red Line”, as well as countless television programs, commercials, and recordings. He’s even appeared several times on “The Tonight Show” and performed in major theatrical productions such as “Sunset Boulevard”, “Beauty and the Beast”, “Ragtime”, and “Titanic”.

Today, Richard brings that same wealth of experience and enthusiasm to the International Classical Concerts of the Desert, where his passion for music and his generous spirit continue to enrich the community. His presence embodies the heart of the organization itself, neighbors uniting to celebrate beauty, art, and human connection.

Each year, ICCD presents five concerts, featuring award- winning international artists such as the Juilliard String Quartet, pianist Joyce Yang, and the Hermitage Piano Trio. The performances are held at the Palm Desert Community Presbyterian Church, chosen not only for its elegant acoustics but for its accessibility and welcoming design: flat pathways, nearby parking, and a serene, intimate atmosphere that welcomes everyone.

This season’s concerts will take place from January 17 through March 28, 2026, offering audiences a rich journey through piano trios, violin and cello solos, and stirring chamber ensembles.
