In late October, Imperial Irrigation District officials, along with Congressman Dr. Raul Ruiz, who provided his firm support, held a special news conference to celebrate the $18.3 million federal grant that was awarded to IID to enhance the district’s electrical grid.
Including an equal match by IID, a total of $36.7 million will be deployed for an Advanced Distribution Management System (ADMS) that will modernize IID’s power system, enhancing reliability for the district’s 165,000 customers in the Imperial Valley and part of the Coachella Valley.
IID Board Chairman Alex Cardenas, along with Director Karin Eugenio, successfully worked with officials at the Department of Energy (DOE) and on Capitol Hill to secure this critical funding.
“We are incredibly grateful to the DOE and everyone who supported our grant application,” Cardenas said. “The ADMS project will significantly boost our ability to improve power restoration, integrate renewable energy and bolster grid reliability.”
He also emphasized the positive impact on the community: “The ADMS initiative is a major step that also creates lasting opportunities for our communities. This investment will bring jobs, clean energy, and workforce development, benefiting many families across the Imperial and Coachella Valley.”
