Home and Garden Club – Sun City Palm Desert

Seeds contain amazing potential. From the vegetables on our dinner plates to lush gardens, we owe a lot to the seeds that grow strong roots to bloom into something beautiful.

This meatphor has deep meaning for the Sun City Palm Desert Home and Garden Club members, who see firsthand the satisfaction of an active gardening community.
The club is excited to welcome their neighbors to their monthly meetings as well as the upcoming 11th annual Home and Garden virtual tour this spring.
The club will host an exclusive launch-reception party on April 9th to view the virtual video. This is a great way for attendees to get a first look at this year’s home and garden selections and experience them up close. The video will also be released online to the public April 9th to view from home.

Meet your friendly green-thumbed neighbors and some of the leaders of the SCPD Home and Garden Club:

Louise Cummings, President. Louise feels a zen and spiritual feeling while she gardens – something she didn’t take up until retirement. “I had a wonderful career,” she says, “but I had no time for gardening. But now I’m at my happiest when my hands are in the dirt!” After 50 years in non-profit fundraising management, Louise’s retirement years have become some of her most inspirational. She’s been a member of the Home and Garden Club since shortly after moving to Sun City in 2016, and has
loved every minute.

Rod Peveler, Treasurer. Rod opened his own construction and cabinet manufacturing company in Hermosa Beach, and grew his company to 52 employees over more than four decades. After Rod and his wife moved to SCPD 12 years ago, they naturally began to remodel their retirement home, and were drawn to the Home and Garden Club. “The Club has offered us so many activities to participate in along with valuable information on how and what to grow in our desert community,” Rod says. “Our garden would not look like it does without the help of the Home and Garden Club!”
Lani Maluhia Young, Tour Co-Chair. Lani still fondly remembers growing up in Santa

Barbara with its walnut and avocado orchards, and tomato and vegetable fields. The garden of her childhood home featured lush plumeria and banana trees, ferns, ginger, hibiscus, bird of paradise, and other tropical plants. After a successful career in commercial property management for over 35 years, Lani moved to Sun City Palm Desert in 2003 and joined the Home and Garden Club. Now she tends and nurtures her own tropical paradise.
Bob Kramer, Tour Co-Chair. Bob has been a Sun City resident for more than 20 years, moving from the Bay Area after a career in investment property management and teaching real estate investment strategies. In 2017, Bob’s home was featured on the Home and Garden tour, and he was asked to head up the docent training and selection committee. He’s proud to have co-chaired the tour committee for several years. The tour has seen new challenges and opportunities as a virtual event over the past couple of years. “It’s been a ‘growing’ experience,” Bob says.
Everyone is welcome to purchase a virtual ticket for the Home and Garden Tour showcasing some of the most beautiful homes and Gardens in Sun City. Whether you’re an expert gardener or looking to get started, the video is inspirational.
“Gardening is a wonderful way to stay active and make a difference in the community and world,” Louise says, “But most of all, finding your passion and staying active makes the biggest difference of all!”

Group activities involve visiting parks, farms, & gardens. Photo: Moorten Botanicals, specializing in cacti and other desert plants.
