Fun in the Sun with Your Dog This Summer

Written by Mara Brown- Master Dog Behaviorist

It is summer! It can get really hot in the desert in the summer. The pavement can burn your dog’s paw pads. To check if the pavement is too hot for your dog, put your hand down on the pavement. If it is too hot for your palm, it is too hot for your dog’s paws. It is best to walk your dog early in the morning, or after the sun goes down.

A great way to exercise your dog and keep them (and you) cool is to take them for a swim! Swimming is a great summer exercise for our dogs. It strengthens their muscles, hearts and lungs without putting pressure on their joints. Swimming is a great way for dogs to burn off energy in the summer while keeping cool.

When teaching a dog to swim in a pool, ALWAYS show them where the exit is and how to get out on their own. Have them wear a doggy life jacket while in or around a pool. Never throw a dog in a pool. Introduce them to it slowly, at their pace with you. Or you can hire a Dog Coach to teach your dog to swim. It is a myth that all dogs can naturally swim. Never leave your dog unsupervised by any water. If your dog shows fear, don’t push it. Let them enjoy the a/c instead. After a swim, bathe your dog to protect their skin and coat from pool chemicals.

Have fun safely playing in the water with your pup this summer!
