Redefining The Game Beyond the Scoreboard: Fred Roggin’s Journey in Sports Commentary

“Unprompted, I kid you not, someone just started singing the Canadian National Anthem,” Roggin recalls enthusiastically. Leaving witnesses stunned, the game was paused while the entire arena joined in that moment of authentic patriotism and sportsmanship. “… and they went on to win the game!” Roggin exclaimed. “It was the greatest moment I’ve ever experienced in my career because it was authentic and it was genuine.” It was a moment that reminded Roggin of the power of sports that transcend boundaries, forge genuine connections, and unite countries and people.

Roggin’s mark on the broadcast industry did not go unrecognized, and his contributions earned him numerous accolades. Decorated with Emmy Awards, Golden Mike Awards, and recognition from prestigious organizations like The Associated Press and the Press Club. Roggin responds, “I’m thankful when I realized that I was being honored like this; it actually brought me to tears,” He was also recognized with a lifetime achievement award from the Los Angeles Press Club and induction into the Southern California Sports Hall of Fame, serving as enduring testaments to his indelible impact on sports broadcasting. With his signature satire intact, he remarked, “I didn’t shed tears for the awards… No, not for the honor, but because that means my life is over, but I am not ready to go just yet!”

Roggin’s journey is not defined by his achievements; whether he was aware of it or not, Roggin built a legacy that sparked innovative ideas in the realm of sports broadcasting and is a testament to his passion, perseverance, and adaptability.

Roggin and his wife, Richel, are no strangers to the desert, as Richel’s grandparents resided here, and they have frequently visited family over the years and have fallen in love with the Valley. Roggin continues to captivate audiences locally with the Roggin Report on NBC Palm Springs. You can also catch Roggin and NFL Quarterback Rodney Peete on the airwaves every day from noon to three by tuning in to KLAC AM 570 on the iHeartRadio app.
