Emotional Support and Our Dogs

Written by Mara Brown Master Dog Behaviorist

It is well documented that dogs can help us get through tough emotional times. Just stroking the fur on your pup can help slow your heart rate and decrease your blood pressure. Looking into your dog’s sweet loving eyes can release oxytocin (the “feel good” hormone) in both you and your dog, and that can decrease cortisol (the stress hormone) in our bodies and calm us.

No matter what side of the fence you sit on, election months can be very stressful. It can be a time of elation, fear, depression, anger, and anxiety. This is a good time to sit quietly with your dog, take deep breaths and just be with your dog. Stroke their fur, look into their eyes, go for a nice long walk, spend some time in nature, have some fun engaging in play together. All these things will help to ease the stress you may be feeling. If you don’t have a dog, this may be a good time to go to your local shelter and think about adopting a dog that needs a forever home. Bring some extra love and joy into your home.

However, a badly behaved dog can add stress to your life. So, if you have a dog with a behavior problem, invest in your dog and yourself and hire a good behaviorist. Most troubling behaviors can be fixed. Get the most out of your relationship with your dog, and have happiness and harmony in your home. And remember to breathe.
