By Ray Smythe, Lifelong Learning Member at Large Use, don’t lose, your mind. The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute located at the California State University San
Bernardino Palm Desert Campus on Cook Street is the place to go.
The OLLI program is for adults aged 50 and above. It offers university classes with a huge range of subjects. There are no homework assignments or tests; courses are presented simply for the joy of learning. What a wonderful concept. One of the great strengths of the program is the quality and diversity of the instructors. Many are retired professors, but others are from the hands-on-world of industry and
business. The one characteristic they share is a great passion for their subject.
There are classes for everyone. Some of the courses scheduled for winter quarter are China in the 21st Century, Climate Change, Broadway’s Golden Years, A History of the Coachella Valley, Amazing Foods, Romantic Poetry, Current Events Discussion, The Greatest Tenors, International Cinema and so many others.
The OLLI program keeps growing by leaps and bounds each year. During the past few years, OLLI has started providing new learning opportunities such as special events and day trips around California. Some of the past trips have been to the Getty Villa, the Griffith Observatory and Warner Brothers studio. During the fall of 2022, OLLI is sponsoring a trip to New England. The list of places to visit keeps growing. Last, but not least, OLLI gives seniors and retirees a chance to meet new people. It is just not about learning new subjects but also mingling with new people who become friends.
As an OLLI member and ambassador, I am both happy and proud to make our community aware of this outstanding program in our valley. I was a teacher for 39 years and I would give the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute an A+ for its outstanding curriculum, instructors and special travel programs.
