CVRep, the Coachella Valley Repertory, has unveiled its exciting lineup for the 2023-2024 season, featuring a diverse range of productions. Executive Artistic Director Adam Karsten promises a thrilling adventure for Coachella Valley audiences with a mix of irresistible classics, reimagined works and new plays reflecting contemporary interests and ideas.
The season kicks off with the West Coast premiere of “The Fantasticks.” This collaboration between Tom Jones and Michigan’s Flint Repertory Theatre offers fresh insights into first love, identity and self-discovery. The show, which retains all the beloved songs from “Try to Remember” to “Soon It’s Gonna Rain,” is bound for Broadway following its exclusive run at CVRep.
Next is the world premiere of “Summer Session With The Bones Brigade,” the first play developed through CVRep’s Origins: New Works Program. Written by Kirby Fields, the play explores themes of adolescence, friendship and coping with loss. Set in the summer of 1988, it follows four teenagers with dreams of becoming competitive skateboarders and their two female friends as they navigate a mysterious disappearance.
VRep will then present the haunting 1998 version of “Cabaret,” immersing the audience in a unique theatrical experience. The musical poses thought-provoking questions about choices and actions in an unstable world, and aims to be pertinent to the world we live in today.
For comedic relief, CVRep brings the Broadway hit “POTUS: OR BEHIND EVERY GREAT DUMBASS ARE SEVEN WOMEN TRYING TO KEEP HIM ALIVE” to the stage. This modern-day political farce satirizes the Oval Office and its colorful cast of characters. With sharp humor and political posturing, the play sheds light on the women who play crucial roles behind the scenes.
Closing the season is the CVRep premiere of “Nice Work If You Can Get It,” an energetic screwball comedy featuring the timeless music of George and Ira Gershwin. The production promises to be the biggest ever mounted on the CVRep stage, with a talented cast and a slew of beloved Gershwin tunes.
CVRep, a non-profit, professional regional theater, is dedicated to producing thought-provoking theatre of substance while also offering theater training and outreach programs for the community. With this exciting lineup, CVRep continues to enrich the Coachella Valley’s cultural scene and provide memorable experiences for residents and visitors alike.
