The Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians inaugurated the 5.8-acre Agua Caliente Cultural Plaza in downtown Palm Springs earlier this fall, marking a significant milestone. The Plaza proudly hosts the Cultural Museum, The Spa at Séc-he Gathering Plaza, and an Oasis Trail.
This remarkable facility’s design draws inspiration from various aspects of Agua Caliente culture and history. Echoes of the desert landscape, mirroring the rock formations found at Indian Canyons to the south of the city and the waterfall at Tahquitz Canyon to the west, are subtly woven into the design. The visionaries behind the project carefully incorporated elements of desert flora, fauna, and ancient Agua Caliente customs, creating a captivating tapestry of heritage.
Tribal Chairman Reid Milanovich expressed that a primary objective of the Tribe was to impart Agua Caliente traditions and history to all visitors, be they local residents or international travelers. He proudly declared, “This is our story, in our authentic voice.” A single visit to the Agua Caliente Cultural Plaza is enough to witness their resounding success, yet it beckons you to return time and again.
The Museum Store proudly showcases art, jewelry, and various items directly sourced from Native American artists and businesses across the nation. Meanwhile, The Spa at Séc-he indulges and enlightens guests with the rejuvenating waters of the mineral spring. Visitors can explore men’s and women’s bathhouses, a salon, and a selection of health conscious dining options.
To encapsulate the entirety of The Cultural Plaza’s story in this space would be impossible; it stands as one of Agua Caliente’s most significant achievements. Allocate a day in the near future to immerse yourself in its wonders, and anticipate being drawn back by its allure.
