Beware of Coyotes

Happy Fall! As we start to cool off (finally), we are going to spend more time outside with our pups. As fun as it is to get back to our long walks and backyard barbecues, it is
important to be aware that we may not be alone. As we continue to build and develop, we are taking away the natural habitat of our wildlife. Specifically, coyotes.

They are becoming increasingly bold as they seek food and water closer and closer to us. And they are very smart. They don’t just snatch small dogs. Now they have come up with
a strategy to get “big” dogs. They send out the youngest and smallest member of their pack and engage a “big” dog in play and slowly get the dog further away from their home
and closer to the pack, at which point they circle the dog and enjoy their meal.

Small dogs can be taken in a heartbeat. I suggest you close your doggie doors and always have eyes on your dog whenever the dog is outside. If you think that your dog will be safe in your enclosed yard, know that coyotes can jump an 8-foot wall. And when walking your dog, don’t be distracted on your phone. Pay attention to your surroundings. You can also walk with hornet spray (which projects a spray), and put your dog in coyote proof clothing (an outfit with spikes that will deter a coyote’s bite).) If you see a coyote in the distance turn around and get inside. Awareness and prevention can save a great deal of heartache. So, enjoy the cooler weather with your pup, but be aware of potential danger.
