Be Prepared for Your Pet’s Disaster-Plans

Written by Mara Brown, Master Dog Behaviorist

If the devastating recent fires in LA taught us anything; it is the importance of being prepared. We never know when we might face a disaster. Fires, earthquakes, floods … or worse. We need to have a “disaster plan” for ourselves and our families that includes our furry family members.

Create a “disaster kit”. In it, have water and canned goods (and bowls) for your human family members, and for your dog (or cat, bunny, hamster, bird, etc.) Don’t forget a can opener– or even better… get cans that have the self-opening tabs.

Include a month’s supply of your medications, and any medications that your pets may be on.

Have all medications and medical records stored in a sealed container, and a first aid kit with a bunch of poop-bags. Have a leash and pet carrier for transportation. Ensure that your pet is microchipped with your most updated information. Also ensure they wear a collar with their identification or have ID tag on their collar.

Include blankets and towels and have a current photo of you with your pet for identification purposes should the need arise. Ask your vet for some calming medication or have some herbal remedies on hand (Rescue Remedy by Bach is good) for your dog or cat should they become stressed or anxious. If your dog has aggression issues, make sure to have a muzzle. Having a book on Pet First Aid can come in handy during these chaotic situations.

Since Hurricane Katrina, it is not legal to force people to evacuate without their pets, so know your rights. We never want to think about potential disasters, but in case the unthinkable happens, be prepared. I pray we never have to use this.

I wish you peace, happiness, and good health!
With Love, Mara Brown
