Carlynne McDonnell’s deep connection with animals has been a constant thread throughout her life. Born and raised in the heart of Houston, Texas, she has always been drawn to the well-being of our furry companions. Her journey into animal advocacy began in junior high when she actively sought out stray animals and ensured they found their way back home or to a safe shelter. This early passion only grew stronger as she advanced to high school.
During those formative years, Carlynne would come across injured animals and swiftly transport them to her trusted veterinarian, who would tirelessly mend their wounds or provide them with a peaceful transition. However, Carlynne’s dream of establishing a permanent haven for shelter animals took a poignant turn when she crossed paths with Bella. Rescued from the Devore Shelter, Bella was a senior pup bearing the scars of a traumatic car accident. Carlynne’s love and care nurtured Bella back to health, creating an unbreakable bond. Sadly, Bella’s journey ended, but she left an indelible mark on Carlynne’s heart. Shortly after Bella’s passing, Carlynne extended her compassion to Sweetie, a Palm Springs Animal Shelter rescue. Sweetie’s story was heart-wrenching, as she had been abandoned just days after her mother’s passing. At 16 years old and gravely ill, Sweetie’s prognosis was bleak, with only 30 days to live. Yet, under Carlynne’s devoted care, Sweetie defied the odds and enjoyed a remarkable 14 months of love and comfort.
Barkee LaRoux’s House of Love Animal Sanctuary, Inc. seeds were sown in 2016. Two years later, Carlynne and her husband, Alex, known affectionately as “The Dogfather,” took a significant step in realizing their dream. They sold their Palm Springs home and acquired a spacious 5-acre parcel of land in the serene expanse of Sky Valley. With minor renovations, the sanctuary was ready to open its doors to senior and hospice dogs in need.
Endorsed by Riverside County, Barkee LaRoux’s House of Love Animal Sanctuary has provided refuge for more than 110 dogs rescued from Southern California shelters. At its core, Barkee’s mission is heartwarming: to offer a forever home to elderly abandoned dogs. It’s a place where their spirits can heal, and they can live out their remaining days in peace and happiness, no matter how long that might be. Today, Carlynne and her dedicated team are on a mission to make a difference in the lives of these deserving animals.
Barkee LaRoux’s House of Love Animal Sanctuary is always looking for passionate volunteers and individuals willing to provide financial support. Their collective efforts serve as a testament to the boundless love that exists within the human heart, and the sanctuary stands as a testament to their unwavering commitment to these senior and hospice dogs in need.
