Thank you to everyone who sent in questions for last month’s Ask the Plumber! The response has been fantastic, and I’ve really enjoyed hearing about the real- world plumbing challenges we all face. This month’s questions come from Amara B., who asked some great ones. Keep those questions coming—you might see yours featured in a future column!

Q: Is it safe to use chemical drain cleaners for hair in my shower drain?

A: I don’t recommend chemical drain cleaners. They can damage pipes and harm the environment. A drain snake or a simple hair-catching tool works best. Regularly clearing hair before it builds up is the easiest way to prevent clogs. Natural enzyme products work well when used periodically also.

Q: What are some simple things homeowners can do to keep plumbing in good shape?

A: Check under sinks and around toilets for leaks monthly, clean faucet aerators, and drain and flush your water heater yearly. Also, know where your main shut-off valves are—this can save you thousands in an emergency.

Q: What upgrades can save money?

A: Low-flow showerheads, dual-flush toilets, and tankless water heaters are excellent options. Smart leak detectors can also prevent costly water damage.
