A Tribute to an Icon: Steve Balian

In June 2023, the Valley experienced a profound loss that left us with heavy hearts. It brought about reflection and reverence for a remarkable man whose life stood as a testament to unwavering faith, unyielding commitment to the community, and an enduring legacy: Steve Balian.

Steve transcended the role of a mere businessman; he became an icon, a cornerstone of our community, and a beacon of profound spirituality. His faith was unwavering, and he often found solace in the pages of the Bible before opening the doors each morning of Carpet Empire – a testament to the depth of his convictions.

Steve’s journey to the desert began amidst the turmoil of Lebanon in the 1970s, a period marked by civil unrest that profoundly impacted not only his life but also the lives of countless others, especially those of Armenian descent like himself. Steve sought a path to a brighter tomorrow in the face of escalating tensions and an uncertain future.

Steve’s initial years in the United States were fraught with challenges. With a mere $400 in his pocket, he faced language barriers, a foreign culture and challenges. However, with unwavering support from his cousins in the United States, his tenacity and his impressive sales
skills, Steve eventually earned the opportunity to own his very own flooring franchise. Over the years, he dedicated himself tirelessly to his trade, and as his son, Michael, grew up within the business they formed an inseparable fatherson partnership. Steve imparted the wisdom of the trade to Michael, leading by example through steadfast dedication and true customer service.

In 1996, a significant milestone marked the beginning of a new chapter. Michael embarked on his entrepreneurial journey alongside his father and they founded Carpet Empire together. What began as a modest 1,500-square-foot establishment swiftly flourished into the empire we know today, spanning over 22,000 square feet across three showrooms in the desert. The iconic duo became legends of the valley, leaving a legacy not just in carpets and flooring but in the hearts of all who crossed their path.

Beyond the physical presence of Carpet Empire, a rich legacy thrived. Steve Balian, the unwavering patriarch, In his absence his beloved son, Michael Balian, now carries the torch and the legacy of Carpet Empire forward. The family tradition of exemplary customer service, an
unwavering commitment to fulfilling promises, and a dedication to standing behind their work remains vibrant and alive. As we pay tribute to Steve Balian, let us also celebrate the enduring spirit of Carpet Empire, where one man’s dreams continue to flourish, enriching our lives and our homes. Steve’s legacy is a testament to the enduring power of hope, determination and family bonds.

Michael, a dedicated proponent of family values, extends this ethos to his employees, whom he regards as an integral part of the extended Carpet Empire family. Michael extends heartfelt appreciation to his steadfast team whose unwavering commitment has forged enduring bonds within the organization. Michael and his esteemed team invite all to visit their welcoming Cathedral City and Indio showrooms.

Furthermore, they are thrilled to unveil their third location in Palm Desert along Highway 111, set to open its doors soon. In closing, Michael reflects on the profound legacy of his father, pledging to uphold the enduring values he instilled within the company. They remain committed to always stand by their work, maintain excellent customer service, and to relentlessly deliver exceptional quality and affordability to the Valley and beyond.
