Rancho Mirage’s newly seated mayor, Lynn Mallotto, often says that coming back to the desert felt like destiny. Though she grew up in Los Angeles and Orange County, her connection to the Coachella Valley began in childhood when she visited family friends who were like second parents. She spent holidays beneath the desert sky and experienced a serenity she couldn’t find anywhere else.
She recalls one memory with unmistakable tenderness. As a nine-year-old riding westbound on Highway 111 after a Christmas stay, she looked out over the quiet desert and declared to her father, “When I grow up, I’m going to live here.” He chuckled, but years later when Lynn was moving to Rancho Mirage to begin her X-ray career at Eisenhower Medical Center, he reminded her of that moment. It was a full-circle return to the place that had already claimed her heart.
Today, Mayor Mallotto has been a resident of the Coachella Valley for over 40 years, with three decades rooted in Rancho Mirage. Her professional path is woven with deep public service: trauma and surgical radiology, 18 years with Cathedral City in public safety, code enforcement, redevelopment, public relations, and eventually Deputy City Clerk. She later served as CEO of the Cathedral City Chamber of Commerce and dedicated years to philanthropic boards across the valley. Her belief in service to neighbors, to staff, and to her community has been the steady thread through it all.
Stepping into the role of mayor, she describes the experience as both humbling and profoundly collaborative. “Public service is contagious,” she says. “You just want to lend a hand to make your community better.” In Rancho Mirage, she emphasizes, leadership is never about one person. The City Council rotates into the mayoral position, and the work is shared across countless hands from commissioners, staff, volunteers, and community partners.
She often compares the city to a jigsaw puzzle: “A puzzle has multiple pieces. If one is missing, it isn’t whole. Our job is to make it whole.” It’s a simple metaphor, but one that beautifully captures her view of public service: every voice, every background, and every perspective coming together to create something complete.
As she moves into this new chapter, Mayor Mallotto remains grounded in the values that have always defined Rancho Mirage. Despite common misconceptions, she reminds residents and visitors that the city is far more than a collection of country clubs; it is a wonderfully diverse, down-to-earth community of families, seniors, workers, and lifelong locals. While the city celebrates accomplishments like Cotino, the revival of the Children’s Discovery Museum, and the growth of a vibrant business corridor, Rancho Mirage continues to look ahead. The city has also updated its Historical Preservation Survey of significant architectural homes throughout the community, a project led by the City’s Historical Preservation Commission and Planning Department in collaboration with Preservation Mirage to highlight and share the architectural brilliance that defines the city’s heritage. With new opportunities, innovative spaces, and a deepening sense of community connection, the city remains focused on advancing the initiatives that will sustain long-term success for everyone.
At the top of the list, Mayor Mallotto is focused on affordable and workforce housing. It may surprise many residents that there are over 5,000 seniors already on waiting lists, and with hospitality, medical, and service professionals commuting long distances to work in Rancho Mirage, the need is both clear and pressing. The city is advancing several affordable housing projects and engaging local stakeholders to identify long-term, sustainable solutions. Economic development, streamlined permitting, and expanding opportunities for small businesses all align with that vision.
Through it all, Mayor Mallotto is quick to emphasize that Rancho Mirage’s greatest strength is its people, its dedicated city staff, its innovative young professionals, its long-time leaders, and the residents who continue to shape the city’s legacy. “It’s a pleasure to serve on the council,” she says. “Every day I walk into City Hall, I am grateful. The wisdom of past leadership and the talents of our current team are what make Rancho Mirage thrive.”
With a steady, thoughtful presence, Mayor Mallotto leads with gratitude, grounded optimism, and an unwavering dedication to the community she dreamed of as a child, now the very community she has the honor of serving as mayor.
