It’s HOT! One of the best ways for dogs to stay active and cool during the summer is swimming. It provides excellent exercise, strengthening your dog’s muscles, their heart, and lungs while being gentle on hips and joints. It’s also a great way to burn off extra energy.
If your dog is new to swimming, introduce them slowly and never force them into the water. Always show them where the pool exit is and how to get out on their own. A doggy life jacket is recommended around pools, and dogs should never be left unattended near any water. If your dog has short hair, consider applying dog-safe sunscreen before time outdoors. After swimming, rinse or bathe your dog to remove pool chemicals and protect their skin and coat.
Remember these two important summer safety tips: If the pavement is too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for your dog’s paws. And never leave your dog alone in a vehicle unless the air conditioning is running.
Have a wonderful, safe, and cool summer!
