A Message from General Air Conditioning, Plumbing, & Electric
Major shifts are on the horizon for the HVAC industry, and they’re set to affect every homeowner, especially those with older systems. Starting January 1, 2025, manufacturers will no longer be allowed to produce air conditioning units that use the refrigerant R-410A. Any remaining inventory can only be installed until December 31, 2025. This change is part of new environmental regulations aimed at reducing greenhouse gases by phasing out refrigerants with high Global Warming Potential (GWP).
The replacements for R-410A are R-32 and R-454B, both of which offer several benefits beyond being more environmentally friendly. These new refrigerants are slightly more energy-efficient and offer better cooling performance. However, one important thing to note is that the new refrigerants are mildly flammable. While this may raise concerns for some, it’s worth remembering that we already use highly flammable substances, like natural gas and propane, in our furnaces, stoves, fireplaces, and water heaters. When installed by qualified professionals and used according to code, these materials are extremely safe. The same will be true for the new refrigerants.
So, what’s the big deal? The most significant concern is cost. Experts predict that the new systems will be about 20% more expensive than current models. This is because the systems will be more complex to manufacture and install. In addition, the new refrigerants require more precise installation, leaving little room for error from contractors.
Patrick Somers, President and CEO of General Air Conditioning & Plumbing, advises homeowners to act now if their HVAC systems are nearing replacement age. “We’ve already seen a slowdown in R-410A system production, and as supply dwindles, costs are rising. Replacing your system now could save you both time and money,” Somers explains. “At General Air, we’re preparing extensively for these new systems by training our team and adopting advanced technology to ensure top-quality installations. As we always say, the most important day in the life of your HVAC system is the day it’s installed.”
If your system is aging or nearing replacement, now is the time to educate yourself on these upcoming refrigerant changes. You’ll need to decide whether it’s better to replace your system now with reliable, proven technology while R-410A units are still available or wait for the new, more efficient and eco-friendly systems.
