Thanksgiving Safety Tips For Your Dog

Written by Mara Brown, Master Dog Behaviorist

Happy Thanksgiving! As we give thanks for our wonderful dogs this month, let’s be sure to keep them safe. Thanksgiving presents some
potential dangers for our dogs. To keep them healthy, do not feed table scraps to your dog. Our foods’ seasoning, gravy, and fat can be deadly to our dogs. Also, bones can fragment and get stuck in or puncture their mouth or throats. It is often hard to ignore those pleading eyes staring hopefully up at you from under the table. But before you sneak your dog a tasty morsel to show them how much you love them and how thankful you are for their love and devotion, remember that people’s food does not equal love.

Keeping your dog healthy and safe is the most loving thing you can do for your dog. Whether preparing the Thanksgiving meal or eating it, be sure your dog is safe and happy away from the table and prep area. Your dog can grab a dropped food item faster than you can say “vet bill.” Plan ahead. Teach your dog a “go to your place” command and have them happily resting in their happy place (perhaps
chewing on a dog’s healthy bone or treat) while you are preparing and eating dinner.

Also, teaching your dog a “leave it” command is a good idea. That will help you keep the trash away from your dog’s yearning nose and mouth. Dogs can be crafty in figuring out ways to get into the garbage with all those tasty scraps. But if your dog snags a bone or grabs some food off the table or from the trash, ACT FAST. Immediately call your vet and/or the Pet Poison Helpline (800) 213-6680. The sooner you seek treatment, the potentially better outcome for your dog. Quick action and training preparation can save you tons of potential heartache.

Take a moment to be extra thankful for your amazing dog this Thanksgiving! I wish you all a healthy, happy, tail-wagging Thanksgiving!
