Hot Water Keeps Your Dog Cool

Clean and fresh water can help your pooch handle hot summer days. Dogs don’t sweat, so it is much more difficult to cool themselves off as well as people can.

Here are some tips:

  • Put an ice cube in your dog’s water bowl and refresh
  • the water often.
  • Supply a doggy pool in the shade for them to take a dip.
  • Always carry fresh water for your dog.
  • If your dog is overheated, it’s best to give room temperature or cool water as ice cold water can upset their stomachs.
  • Rinse a bandana under cold water, wring out slightly and put it around your dog’s neck.
  • Wet their paws; this is a way for dogs to cool off.

What else can you do?

  • Dogs stay cooler taking naps on non-carpet floors.
  • Exercise in the early morning and late evening. Never walk during mid-day, especially in the open sun.
  • Avoid extreme heat and heat-related illnesses like heat stroke and heat exhaustion by bringing dogs indoors.
  • 5-second rule: If it’s too hot to hold the back of your palm on the pavement for 5 seconds, it’s too hot for your dog’s paws.
